Pets in parked cars
You see a dog in a hot car. Here's what to do, minute by minute
If a dog is left in a parked car on a warm day, act fast: the inside of a car can heat up about 19°F (10°C) in 10 minutes. If the dog looks distressed, call 911 or animal control right away. At the same time, try to reach the owner: ask nearby stores to page them, or scan the car's Autter QR code if it has one. Follow your local law before breaking a window.

Hot cars in 30 seconds
- A closed car heats up about 19°F (10°C) in 10 minutes and about 29°F (16°C) in 20 minutes, on average.
- Cracking the windows makes almost no difference.
- Even on a 70°F (21°C) day, a car can get hotter than 110°F (43°C) within an hour.
- Signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, collapse. Call for help immediately.
- Autter is never a replacement for 911 or animal control. It's a way to reach the owner at the same time.
How hot does a parked car get?
Researchers at San Francisco State University measured how fast a closed car heats up compared with the air outside. The average rise, which the American Veterinary Medical Association also uses, looks like this:
| Time parked | Rise inside the car | On a 70°F (21°C) day | On an 80°F (27°C) day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 minutes | +19°F (+10.6°C) | about 89°F (32°C) | about 99°F (37°C) |
| 20 minutes | +29°F (+16°C) | about 99°F (37°C) | about 109°F (43°C) |
| 30 minutes | +34°F (+19°C) | about 104°F (40°C) | about 114°F (46°C) |
| 60 minutes | +43°F (+24°C) | about 113°F (45°C) | about 123°F (51°C) |
Dogs cool themselves mainly by panting, which works poorly in hot, still air. That's why a short errand on a mild day can still be dangerous.
What to do if you see a dog in a hot car
- 1Check the dog. Heavy panting, thick drool, glazed eyes, weakness, vomiting or collapse are emergencies.
- 2Call for help if it looks bad. Call 911 or local animal control. Give the location, the car's color, make and plate, and the dog's condition.
- 3Try to reach the owner at the same time. If the car has an Autter QR code, scan it, choose "Something else" and write "Your dog looks overheated in your car at [location]". The owner gets a text in seconds. Share your number so they can call you.
- 4Ask nearby stores to page the owner with the car's description and plate.
- 5Stay with the car until help or the owner arrives, and note the time you found it.
Who to call
- 911 if the dog shows signs of heatstroke or the car is in full sun on a hot day.
- Animal control or your local humane society for less urgent cases. Many have a 24-hour line.
- The store or building manager, who can page the owner over the intercom.
- The owner directly, through the car's QR code, if it has one.
For pet owners: be reachable in the minutes that matter
The best plan is not to leave your dog in the car at all on a warm day. But plans change: the line is longer than expected, the car is in the sun, the AC shut off. If someone notices, you want to hear about it in seconds, not when you walk out of the store.
A free Autter QR code on your windshield lets a worried passerby text you right away, without your number being on display. It gives people a calmer first step than smashing a window, alongside calling for help.
Dog in a hot car questions
How hot is too hot to leave a dog in the car?
There's no safe number. Even on a 70°F (21°C) day, a closed car can reach about 89°F (32°C) in 10 minutes and more than 110°F (43°C) within an hour. Cracking the windows barely helps.
Who do I call if I see a dog in a hot car?
Call 911 if the dog is in distress, or animal control for less urgent cases. At the same time, try to reach the owner through the store or the car's QR code.
Can I break a car window to save a dog?
It depends on where you are. Some US states protect rescuers who call 911 first and use only the force needed. Many other places reserve this for police or animal control. Ask the 911 dispatcher.
Does cracking the window keep a car cool?
No. Studies of parked cars found that cracking the windows has very little effect on how hot the inside gets.
How does Autter help in this situation?
If the car has an Autter QR code, anyone can scan it and alert the owner instantly by text or email. It's a fast way to reach the owner while you call for help. It never replaces 911 or animal control.
